The growing demand for proper treatment and early
detection of diabetic and other disease-related
wounds prompted the introduction of a two-day Wound
Care Symposium at Medtrade '97 in
New
Orleans, Oct. 9-10, 1997.
"This program is a welcome addition to
Medtrade, which has always had a strong emphasis on
showcasing the latest in wound care, incontinence and
ostomy products," said Mark Simmering, executive
vice president and COO at SEMCO, the organizer of
Medtrade. "This symposium sets out to offer
attendees a specialized approach to wound care
treatment."
According to medical studies, 1.5 million to 4
million patients suffer from chronic, non-healing
wounds. Other studies report that the cost of
treating a single-pressure wound can be as high as
$50,000.
This Medtrade '97 debut of the Wound Care
Symposium will offer attendees a comprehensive,
hands-on, academic look at the importance of becoming
educated about the advancements in wound care and
treatment. The program will expose physicians,
nurses, physical therapists fund other wound-care
professionals to update practices offered by today's
medical community
Attendees will receive guidance on the staging of
wounds, prevention and treatment of ulcers,
strategies for saving the diabetic foot, case studies
and break- throughs in research. The program, which
will be hosted by podiatric wound consultant Dr.
Tamara Fishman will include the following elements:
- Diabetic foot-care principles and management
- Appropriate debridement techniques for lower-
extremity ulcers
- Moist-wound healing concepts/products
- Etiologies and management of lower-extremity
wound care
Fishman is a licensed physician of podiatric
medicine in Florida and Georgia who has specialized
in wound care for the past five years. She is an
adjunct faculty member at Barry University School of
Podiatric Medicine and Broward Community College and
president of the Wound Care Institute.
"The symposium will expand upon one of the
larger categories of products showcased here at
Medtrade," Simmering said. "Through a
conscious effort to offer more and more related
educational programs, we are excited to add this to
the 1997 event."
